In many parts of southern China, residents of surrounding neighborhoods organize markets on certain days to sell daily commodities. What the painting depicts is the life of the Yi people, who live on the Yunnan-Guizhou Plateau, dressed in their traditional clothing and going to the bustling markets with their family members.
