Tan Xu

Tan Xu

Tan Xu was born in 1982 in Shenyang, Liaoning Province. Currently chairman of the Artists Association of Tianhe District, Guangzhou, Guangdong Province, member of the China Sculpture Institute; and member of the China Artists Association.

By employing the techniques of surrealism, the artist combines 2D vocabulary with 3D sculpture: he places a fried breadstick, a kind of traditional Chinese food, in banquette wrappers, smearing cream on top. This quasi-absurd integration blurs and thus interchanges the symbols of two different cultures, invoking reflections regarding the judgement of value between western and Chinese cultures. China, in the course of modernization, is exploring its cultural heritage and simultaneously creating the local culture of our era.
