A book connects East and West through Photographic Art

The European – Chinese Photographic Yearbook  is proving to be a highly influential book. It’s not just a collection of amazing photos. But it is also a record of visual art and narratives from East and West. It promotes cultural exchange and International Communication in Photographic Art. This is the first of an existing Chinese photo book series to be published in London, with parallel texts in Chinese and English. It brings together almost 250 diverse images from more than 150 photographers located around the world.

As a medium that combines technology and art, photography has evolved significantly since its invention in the 19th century when it was used for documentary recording to its acceptance today as an art form in its own right. It is widely understood that a powerful image can express the ideas and the emotions of the photographer.

This book explores the contemporary dimensions of photography from two perspectives — integration and sharing. On one hand, it analyses interdisciplinary creative practices; on the other, it focuses on photography’s cross-cultural function.  It demonstrates how contemporary photography continues to generate new shared values within a global context. For example, photographer Zhu Xianmin’s work, included in The European – Chinese Photographic Yearbook, extends Cartier-Bresson’s notion of the “decisive moment” to encompass the spirit and transformation of Chinese society.

The publisher, Sino European Arts, is based in central London. Upholding the mission of “building a bridge between Eastern and Western aesthetics, promoting intercultural dialogue, and inspiring artistic innovation,” it is dedicated to curating, organising, and coordinating international art exhibitions and providing collaboration platforms for artists. The European – Chinese Photographic Yearbook is a great example of this mission in practice, presenting readers with a wonderful and authoritative photographic classic.
