Chen Jian

Chen Jian

Chen Jian was born in 1959 in Qingdao, Shandong Province. Currently professor at the China Academy of Art; co-director and secretary general of the China Artists Association Watercolor Artistic Committee; and member of the China Artists Association.

The Tajik people, a special ethnic group of the Chinese minorities, are known for their profound cultural traditions and unique ethnical characteristics. The artist, who has been emotionally attached to the Tajik people for a long time, generalizes the portrait and colors to a very succinct degree. In the compact lines and bold colors, which he accomplishes with ease, the audience can feel the totality of the image, the condensed volume of the space and illumination of the colors he tries to convey. The sincerity of the figure is intensified in this seemingly insipid painting.
