Yan Ping
Yan Ping, a female artist, was born in 1956 in Jinan, Shandong Province. Currently professor at the Renmin University of China’s School of Arts; member of the China Oil Painting Society council; and a member of the China Artists Association council.
Many of the female characters in traditional Peking Opera are in fact played by actors, which is one of the most prominent characteristics of Peking Opera performances. Being a huge opera fan, the artist pays close attention to the gap which exists between the roles on stage and the actual lives of the actors. They are not subjected to the limitations of standardized ways of performance but practice their true selves, alternating with the character they play. Audiences can feel the symbolic significance of traditional culture in the highly contrasting and intensively bold colors of the painting.
